Europe Reborn

Murugu - 's poem
A continent ripe for revision
The Zephyr blew the western sands
But so complete was the division
A mist stood on the easter lands.
Ideology appeared the barrier
With radio waves the only carrier
That could transcend the prison wall
Enough to make the ramparts fall.
And so we cheered – at first in Warsaw
And then of course in Budapest,
The tyrant’s fall in Bucharest,
For Prague and Havel even more so.
So can we now be of good cheer
And lay to rest at last our fear ?

Divided Europe, so pacific,
Amazed historians all these year
But now that freedom is prolific
Once more we hear the ancient fears.
All are concerned about the Germans.
And furtively are preached the sermons
As no one dares say it aloud.
But undercurrents in the crowd
Of newly free and greater powers
Just go to show that some are scared –
Old border issues might be bared,
We may be faced with nuclear showers.
This freedom, can’t it be enjoyed ?
Must I be quite so paranoid ?
