Back to poems
It seems to be a modern trend
That marriages come to an end.
But Burjor and Aloo go on and on
And fifty years and more have gone.
You may think it quaint and nice
Their children know the sacrifice,
They made throughout, without once blinking,
Forgetting self and only thinking
About the future they could build
And they achieved what they had willed.
Four children now, all standing tall,
Coincidentally doctors all.
Although they faced some stormy weather
They always faced their troubles together.
And since they chose to live in LA
They often had a sunny day.
Burjor kept precise accounts
But to my mind what really counts
Is that he put his children first
And so to satisfy their thirst
For knowledge, though he was quite senior
He gave up his career in Kenya
To start a fresh in the USA,
On the East Coast and then LA.
Grandchildren are a cause of joy
With them he is a little boy
And he would often play the fool
And drive them to the park and school.
Aloo’s been a source of strength,
For she will go to any length
To help all those who are in need.
Students new in town she’d feed
Curry rice, samosas, sweet,
Till they were quickly on their feet.
By her example she shows the way
In fact, she would often say,
“To have a friend, just be a friend.”
And for all those in need, she would spend
All that she had instinctively!
She gives her all to family
From her we learn selfless love
And faith, not just in God above,
But in ourselves and in each other.
We know we can depend on mother
She gives the world her love and care
And always lives our daily prayer.
“The good mind is for he who protects
And nourishes the poor.” She elects
To cook for every Parsi feast,
Delicious food from the East.
So raise your glasses let us drink.
We wish them joy, we wish them health,
We wish them peace, we wish them wealth.
And very soon we shall see
You at their diamond jubilee.
