Back to poems
We shouldn’t take tonight so lightly,
For this event, indeed, is weighty.
Our Mitha always very sprightly
Surprisingly is turning eighty.
Hers was the hand that rocked the cradle
And did the needlepoint and knitting.
She was no star with dish or ladle,
But surely it was very fitting,
She stitched for both her girl and boy,
They had no need for any tailor.
And she was never shy or coy,
She could keep up with any sailor.
On meeting you, she sets to work,
By learning all you have to say.
Genealogy, profession, quirk,
Name, number, unit, filed away.
Thus many a match she smartly made.
When she was young, she wished to fly,
No one could say that she was staid,
And all that’s new, she loves to try.
She’s ready to travel anywhere.
And recently on a Persian trip,
Though ladies don’t smoke over there,
She just would not give it a skip.
And though she smokes, she stays so trim,
Perennially she’s fighting fit,
Her style of eating keeps her slim.
She’s not content to merely sit.
She’s busy with her Miniland,
Where all the little tots are taught.
She always lends a helping hand,
She often fights a case in court.
She works for some associations,
Such as the women’s group of SAARC.
With Zonta she has close relations.
With Lionettes she’s made her mark.
She always keeps a frenzied pace.
I’m told that she disliked accounting,
Decades before the Enron case.
And yet she keeps her cash flow mounting.
This teacher is top of the class,
For she has mastered every test.
May I ask you to raise your glass
And wish dear Mitha all the best.
